About
Downtown Kearney a.k.a. 'The Bricks.'
offers some of the finest shopping, dining, and entertainment from Lincoln to Denver. Promoted by the Kearney Downtown Improvement Board, this historic district features exceptional boutiques, jewelry stores, men’s and women’s apparel, furninture stores, fine dining restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, arts and entertainment, specialty pubs, and nightlife experiences. Not only is the retail community healthy, but there are a variety of service-related businesses that support the needs of the community, as well as the newly renovated Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA). The vibrancy of ‘The Bricks’ is a direct reflection of the tremendous community support and pride in Kearney.
Rich History
In addition to ‘The Bricks’ (north of the railroad tracks), Old Towne: Kearney Junction, south of the tracks on Central Avenue, is the original business district in Kearney and is flourishing with a number of small businesses and exciting things to see and do. Old Towne is home to unique, local commerce and has a rich history especially pertaning to the railroad’s profound influence on our town.
We Value Preservation
Revitalizing a historic district is not only a boon to business owners but to the community as a whole. Our hope is that Downtown Kearney is the focal point of our city’s culture, entertainment, and history – a bustling hub of business and enjoyment for all ages in our community!
Developing the downtown area into a distinctive experience requires a commitment of effor and funds by the community and individual business owners. Only through a cooperative effort can a vital part of Kearney’s past be saved and expanded upon for future generations to enjoy.
The Downtown Kearney Preservation Grant Program
One of the Downtown Improvement Board’s goals is to help preserve the architectural character of downtown Kearney. Each year, the Downtown Improvement Board offers grants to assist local businesses in the preservation of their buildings.
The Grant Program is generously funded by the Kearney Community Redevelopment Authority and administered by the Downtown Improvement Board. City Manager, Brenda Jensen, can advise property owners on the Grant Program and provide resources on how to rehabilitate their buildings, while retaining those historic features. A number of additional financial incentives are available for owners of historic properties. More information on the benefits of these programs can be found below at these links.
